Exelon Energy spokesman Ralph DeSantis told “Good Morning America” Monday that they still don’t know what caused the leak, which forced the evacuation of 150 workers due to airborne contamination.

“It happened when workers were cutting through pipes and also using a vacuum type device that may have blown radioactive particles up into the air,” DeSantis said.

The leak was discovered shortly after 4 p.m. Saturday in an opening of the Unit 1 building that had been shut down for improvements.

Authorities say 20 of the 150 workers who were evacuated Saturday afternoon tested positive for radiation. The worst exposure registered at 16 millirems, the equivalent of about three x-rays.

“Because of a deteriorating financial condition and prompting by many of his beloved patients, on November 20, 2009, Dr. Conrad Murray resumed his cardiology practice in Houston Texas,” his attorney Edward Chernoff said in a statement. “Doctor Murray plans to attend to patients in both Las Vegas and Houston.”

Murray told congregants at a Houston church Sunday that he “wanted to go home and take his life back step by step.”

Wiping away tears, he asked parishoners to pray for him. “I know what trouble is,” he told the congregation, according to RadarOnline.com. “I, with my compassion, was only trying to help my fellow man. But it appears I was at the wrong place at the wrong time.”

Rep. Obey’s shot across the bow came on the heels of Senate Armed Services Chairman Carl Levin (D-MI) telling Bloomberg News’ Al Hunt that a war tax on the high earners might be necessary to fund a surge of troops into Afghanistan.

The cost of human life and limb is, no doubt, the one that weighs most heavily on President Obama as he prepares his final touches on his Afghanistan strategy, but the estimated cost of $1 million per solider per year in the current economic context and its impact on other Obama priorities is one the White House is taking into very serious consideration.

On Afghanistan, Democrats are mixing a much more dangerous political brew for President Obama. The White House takes pains to say that domestic political calculations are not a part of the president’s strategy review process, but the political reality of a revolt by his fellow Democrats due to his surging troops into Afghanistan is not easily ignored.

Dashawn Vasconcellos, 18, died of gunshot wounds to the torso, neck and extremities, medical examiner spokeswoman Ellen Borakove said. Police fired a total of 14 times, chief NYPD spokesman Paul J. Browne said.

According to an autopsy completed late Sunday, Vasconcellos had three gunshot wounds in the middle of his back, five in his right side and three on his left side, Borakove said. Five police bullets were recovered during the autopsy, she said.

Vasconcellos and two others were spotted leaving a city park in the city’s Queens borough at about 11:30 p.m. Saturday by four officers in an unmarked car. Vasconcellos ran and was pursued by three officers. He then turned and pointed a 9mm semiautomatic pistol at them, Browne said.

“They ordered him to drop the gun, and he did not comply. Three officers fired a total of 14 shots,” Browne said.

Vasconcellos, who was also carrying a boxcutter, did not fire his gun. He was pronounced dead at Jamaica Hospital.

The men with Vasconcellos, who did not flee police, have been questioned by officers. It’s unclear why the men were in the park after hours.

A second worm to hit the iPhone has been unearthed by security company F-Secure.

It is specifically targeting people in the Netherlands who are using their iPhones for internet banking with Dutch online bank ING.

It redirects the bank’s customers to a lookalike site with a log-in screen.

The worm attacks “jail-broken” phones – a modification which enables the user to run non-Apple approved software on their handset.

The handsets at risk also have SSH (secure shell) installed.

Many people use SSH so other programs can remotely connect to an iPhone and, among other things, transfer files. It comes with a default password, “alpine” which should be changed.

Users who have installed SSH and not changed the password are especially at risk.

The new worm is more serious than the first because it can behave like a botnet, warns F-Secure.

This enables the phone to be accessed or controlled remotely without the permission of its owner.

‘Clearly malicious’

“It’s the second iPhone worm ever and the first that’s clearly malicious – there’s a clear financial motive behind it,” F-Secure research director Mikko Hypponen told the BBC.

“It’s fairly isolated and specific to Netherlands but it is capable of spreading.”

He added although the number of infected phones was thought to be in the hundreds rather than thousands, the worm could jump from phone to phone among owners using the same wi-fi hotspot.

A spokesperson for ING Bank said that a warning was going to be put on the bank’s official website.

“We are also briefing call centre personnel,” she added. “It’s important to remember that the worm only affects jail-broken phones and it is only aimed at customers in the Netherlands.”

The first iPhone worm, called ikee, was harmless. Users with infected phones found their wallpaper replaced with a picture of 1980s popstar Rick Astley.

It also targeted jail-broken phones which were SSH enabled.

Its creator Ashley Towns said he wrote the ikee program in order to raise the issue of iPhone security.

Nato said three of the US soldiers died in southern Afghanistan on Sunday and the other in a bomb explosion on Monday in the east of the country.

This has been the deadliest year for foreign troops since the 2001 invasion.

President Barack Obama is set to hold his ninth and “possibly” final meeting with his war advisers later on Monday as he decides on US troop levels.

He is weighing a request from his top commander in Afghanistan, Gen Stanley McChrystal, for 40,000 more US troops to support the war effort.

Among the officials attending the evening meeting are Vice-President Joe Biden, Defence Secretary Robert Gates and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, the White House said.

A US official said it would “possibly” be the last consultation before a new Afghan strategy was announced, though he cautioned that it was not something he could say “definitively”.

Firefight

In a statement released on Monday, Nato’s International Security Assistance Force (Isaf) said that of those who died in southern Afghanistan, two US soldiers had been killed by a bomb attack and the other in a separate firefight with insurgents.

Three Afghan soldiers were also killed in a separate incident on Sunday by a roadside bomb in Helmand province, Afghanistan’s Ministry of Interior said.

It said two other Afghan National Army soldiers had been wounded in the Musa Qala district by the same roadside bomb that had killed their three colleagues.

It added that six soldiers in Kunar province and one in Kandahar had been injured in incidents in the past 24 hours.

The ministry did not give any details of how the soldiers had been hurt.

As yet there has been no confirmation of any connection between the US and Afghan deaths.

Soldiers from more than 40 countries make up Nato’s force of nearly 110,000, two-thirds of them from the US.

The biggest contingents operating in the west of the country are from the United States and Italy.

The explosion happened at the Arsenal 31 depot on the outskirts of Ulyanovsk, 900km (550 miles) south-east of Moscow.

The dead were reportedly all members of a bomb disposal unit, who were loading live ammunition onto a lorry.

The previous explosions and fires killed two soldiers as they attempted to decommission weapons.

Two people were also injured in Monday’s accident, a defence ministry spokesman said.

The blast took place at 1430 (1130 GMT) when the team were clearing the area in the navy base which had been affected by the huge explosions and fire on 13 November.

Investigations are under way into both incidents.

At the time of the 13 November incident, officials said artillery shells and torpedoes were kept at the arsenal.
